About Us
- ›Pottery has shaped Moroccan daily life for centuries — from the clay tagines in every kitchen to the famous Fes blue plates and the bright bowls of Safi.
- ›This hands-on workshop in Marrakech is your chance to step inside that tradition and try it yourself, guided by skilled local artisans.
- ›The class begins with a short introduction to the history and meaning of pottery in Moroccan culture.
- ›You then move on to the clay itself, learning the main techniques the artisans use every day — coiling, pinching, and throwing on the wheel.
- ›You shape a piece of your own at your own pace, with the artisan helping you whenever you need.
- ›Next comes the fun part: decorating.
- ›You discover the traditional Moroccan patterns and colors, choose your design, and apply the glaze.
- ›The artisan then fires your piece in a real kiln, which hardens the clay and sets the colors.
- ›By the end of the class you take home your finished pottery — a real Moroccan souvenir made entirely by you.
Experience Itinerary
-
1
Introduction to pottery
- ›The class opens with a short, friendly introduction to the history and significance of pottery in Moroccan culture.
- ›The artisan shows you finished examples — from cooking tagines to decorative plates — and explains where each style comes from, so you understand the tradition you are about to take part in.
-
2
Hands-on clay work
- ›Now you put your hands in the clay.
- ›The artisan teaches the three main techniques used in Moroccan pottery — coiling (building up the walls with rolls of clay), pinching (shaping a small bowl with your fingers), and wheel throwing (working a piece on the spinning potter's wheel).
- ›You try each method and start shaping your own piece.
-
3
Decorating and glazing
- ›Once your piece holds its shape, the fun creative step begins.
- ›You explore traditional Moroccan patterns — geometric shapes, stars, stripes, and Berber symbols — and choose the colors you want.
- ›The artisan then shows you the right glazing technique so the design comes out bright and clean after firing.
-
4
Firing in the kiln
- ›The artisan loads your finished, decorated piece into a real working kiln.
- ›The high heat hardens the clay and fixes the colors of the glaze.
- ›You see how the traditional firing process works and how a soft, fragile piece of clay becomes a strong ceramic object ready for daily use.
-
5
Completion — take your piece home
- ›When the firing is done and the piece has cooled, you collect your finished pottery.
- ›The artisan wraps it carefully so you can take it home safely.
- ›You leave the workshop with a one-of-a-kind Moroccan souvenir — designed, shaped, and painted entirely by your own hands.
